Abstract
A health technology assessment in Germany has been discussed since the late 1990s, around the advent of evidence-based medicine. The role of health technology assessment (HTA) has been firmly established with the main organizations, including the German Institute for Medical Documentation and Information (DIMDI), Federal Joint Committee (G-BA), and Institute for Quality and Efficiency in Health Care (IQWiG). In the first decade of the twenty-first century, the German Agency of Health Technology Assessment (DAHTA) was established in the DIMDI as the official disseminator of HTA information to the public. The G-BA is responsible for decision making on statutory health insurance benefit coverage, and issues directives. The IQWiG, an independent HTA agency, assesses the effectiveness, quality, and efficiency of health technologies on behalf of the G-BA and the Ministry of Health. German HTA activities have been strengthened and expanded based on the amendment of the Law on Market R eforms in Medicine (AMNOG) in 2011 and introduction of coverage with evidence development in 2012.
